Rockport Maine is for Artists
January 13, 2010 4:07 am TravelOne of Maine’s hidden gems is the frequently overlooked Center for Maine Contemporary Art (CMCA) in Rockport. Consider one of the finest Maine museums for contemporary artists in New England (if not the entire United States), the museum exhibits work by hundreds of living artists every year. Established in 1952 with the launch of a modest summer art exhibit by Maine Coast Artists, the founders sought to create a working network for Maine artists. Today, the nonprofit CMCA offers exhibitions, educational programs and professional development workshops throughout much of the year. Exhibitions cover an eclectic spectrum of styles and genres from local crafts and self-portraiture to photography and exhibitions that have explored the influence comics have had on contemporary art. Located in the village of Rockport, at 162 Russell Avenue, CMCA also offers their facilities overlooking the scenic Rockport harbor for special events, including weddings, parties, reunions, and business events. Admission is free to Rockport residents, members, and children. The facilities are wheelchair accessible. Call (207) 236-2875 for more information
